Collapse of a polymer chain in a melt of incompatible polymer chains

چکیده
2014 We study the conformation of a linear polymer chain A in a melt of linear polymeric chains B of a different chemical species in the temperature domain where A and B chains are incompatible. We are lead to a strong contraction of the A chain similar to the usual collapse of a single chain in a poor solvent. However, the transition between the ideal and the collapsed state of the coils is more abrupt than for a single chain in a poor solvent. J. Hysteretic behavior of a polymer molecule immersed in an incompatible melt
The radius of gyration of a polymer chain immersed in a low molecular weight solvent is known to vary monotonically with the solvent quality. Here, we consider the behavior of a chain immersed in a high molecular weight solvent (polymer melt). Unsurprisingly, we find that, as the incompatibility between the chain and the polymer melt is increased, the two limiting conformations of the chain are...
متن کاملSingle-molecule study on polymer diffusion in a melt state: effect of chain topology.
We report a new methodology for studying diffusion of individual polymer chains in a melt state, with special emphasis on the effect of chain topology. A perylene diimide fluorophore was incorporated into the linear and cyclic poly(THF)s, and real-time diffusion behavior of individual chains in a melt of linear poly(THF) was measured by means of a single-molecule fluorescence imaging technique....
متن کاملProperties of Confined Polymer Melts
Properties of simple models of confined linear polymer chains were studied by means of the Monte Carlo method. Model chains were built of united atoms (statistical segments) and embedded to a simple cubic lattice. Then polymers were put into a slit formed by two parallel impenetrable surfaces. Chain lengths were varied up to 800 segments and the density of the polymer melt was changed up to 0.5...
متن کاملLattice Monte Carlo simulations of polymer melts.
We use Monte Carlo simulations to study polymer melts consisting of fully flexible and moderately stiff chains in the bond fluctuation model at a volume fraction 0.5. In order to reduce the local density fluctuations, we test a pre-packing process for the preparation of the initial configurations of the polymer melts, before the excluded volume interaction is switched on completely. This proces...
متن کاملEffects of Thymolphthalein on Thermo-Oxidative Stability of High Density Polyethylene in Melt and Solid States
The present work aimed to evaluate capability of a new molecular structure to stabilize polyethylene against thermal oxidation. Hence, effects of 3,3-bis(4-hydroxy-2-methyl-5-propan-2-ylphenyl)-2-benzofuran-1-one (thymolphthalein) on thermo-oxidative stability of high density polyethylene (HDPE) in both solid and melt states were investigated and compared with those of SONGNOX 1010, a comme...
